Abstract

Vitamin B12 is an essential compound for many physiological processes such as the maintenance
of myelin sheaths of neurons and hematopoiesis. It is obtained from animal products such as dairy
or meat and its deficiency can cause hematological complications, generally quickly reversible, and
neurological complications, potentially serious and irreversible if not treated in time. In the case of
exclusive breast-fed infants, the only supply of this vitamin will depend on the mother, so that a
maternal deficit could lead to a deficit in the infant, with the consequent consequences. The
possible effects of Vitamin B12 deficiency in newborns will be studied through an observational
study carried out at the Pereira Rossell Hospital Center, by means of nutritional surveys, analysis
of neonatal surveys and current evaluation of Vitamin B12 dosage in mothers. The information
collected will complement the database generated by the 2021 Monograph Group. The proposed
objective is to follow up mothers who obtained a deficient Vitamin B12 test, with the intention of
re-evaluating it at present by means of complementary tests of methylmalonic acid and
homocysteine, and to identify the possible repercussions in the newborns of these mothers.
It was concluded that the variables studied were not associated with the level of vitamin B12 in
our sample, neither between vitamin B12 values and the alteration of neonatal screening. In any
case, more studies are needed, possibly with larger samples, to be able to evaluate the
relationship between these variables.
