Prevalence of school detention and associated sociocultural factors
Abstract
The term learning disability refers to multiple factors, intrinsic and extrinsic, which may negatively interfere in school learning. The analysis of the causes of school failure from the perspective of health can be a contribution to optimize the development of educational policies.
A cross-sectional descriptive study of 120 children from 8 to 14 years of age, assisted in the health center La Paloma (Montevideo), between July 2012 and March 2013 was done. School retention was defined as repeating a school year and failure a a repetition of 2 or more years. The mean age was 9.8 years. Prevalence of school retention was 40%, and school failure 21.6%. Potential factors associated with grade retention were non-attendance to preschool and a background of brothers that also were grade repeaters.
