Duodenocutaneous fistula treatment - Combined approach, regarding a case
Abstract
Gastrointestinal fistulae are defined as abnormal communications between hollow organs or between a hollow organ and the skin. Fistulas generate a high morbimortality. Between 80 and 90 % are secondary to a surgical procedure, and between 10 and 20 % are spontaneous (related to radiotherapy, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, among others). Sepsis represents the main cause of death among those patients who develop a gastrointestinal fistula regardless of the cause of origin of the fistula. The goal of this article is to present a first case in Uruguay of a high output duodenocutaneous fistula, and describe its resolution, which included a combined medical-surgical-endoscopic approach.
