Hypovitaminosis D in children under 15 years of age on chronic treatment with antiepileptics. Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell, July - September 2023
Abstract
Hypovitaminosis D is a common health problem, it can be determined by many causes, including the chronic use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs).
The aim of the study was to describe the frequency of hypovitaminosis D in children under 15 years of age undergoing chronic treatment with AEDs hospitalized in moderate care at the Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell (CHPR) between July and September 2023.
This is an observational, cross-sectional study that included children aged between 1 month and 15 years under chronic treatment with AEDs hospitalized in moderate care at the CHPR between July – September 2023. Variables: gender, age, type of AEDs, reason for prescription, treatment time, vitamin D
supplementation (dosage), vitamin D concentration in the blood, risk factors for hypovitaminosis.
Fifty patients were included, with a mean age of 8 years, 60% of whom had risk factors. 62% used AEDs for epilepsy control. 66% were non-inducers. 46% had been prescribed more than a year ago. 78% did not receive vitamin D supplementation. None had previous dosing, 36% had blood vitamin D dosed, of
which all were with a concentration below 30 mg/dl (hypovitaminosis). In all patients who were tested for vitamin D levels, levels below normal were found. A significant proportion of patients were without supplementation or with doses below those indicated in national
guidelines. Further research is important to explore and standardize these aspects.
