Level of knowledge about gestational nutrition: observational study in a population of postpartum women

Abstract

Maternal malnutrition during pregnancy is associated with multiple maternal and fetal complications. International evidence shows that pregnant women are largely unaware of nutritional recommendations. With the aim of describing the level of knowledge and counseling
on nutritional recommendations during the gestational period in postpartum women, this study aims to be a starting point for future research and the planning of intervention strategies. The study is an observational, descriptive cross-sectional study. Data were collected through a voluntary and anonymous survey targeted at women in postpartum period. Responses were obtained from 123 postpartum women. A statistically significant difference was observed in the level of knowledge about nutritional requirements in pregnancy between women who had received counseling during obstetric check-ups and those who had not (p-value = 0.003). 44.7% of the postpartum women were aware of toxoplasmosis, 23.6% were aware of salmonella, and 2.4% were aware of listeria. The findings of this research support the idea that the creation of a national guide on pregnancy nutrition could increase the frequency and quality of nutritional counseling routinely in obstetric check-ups.
