Stroke in young people at the Hospital de Clínicas Stroke Unit, Montevideo
Abstract
Stroke in young is less common than in older subjects, but its incidence is increasing. The etiology may be different in both subpopulations, however the classic cardiovascular risk factors are having an increasing role in young people. We did a retrospective study analyzing the characteristics of strokes in this age group during 2009 and 2010 in the Stroke Unit of the Hospital de Clinicas, Montevideo, Uruguay, was performed. Ten patients were identified: 8% of the total stroke population. Hemorrhagic supremacy over ischemic nature and good functional outcome in the follow up were found. Classic cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension, played a key role in brain hemorrhage, but not in ischemic stroke. In the latter, the prothrombotic etiology was the most prevalent.
