avances en la embriología molecular y la evolución

Resumen

En esta revisión examinaremos estudios sobre biología molecular que revolucionaron los conceptos actuales sobre la evolución animal, generando una nueva disciplina llamada Evo-Devo en inglés, o evolución y desarrollo molecular en castellano. Primero, discutiremos el descubrimiento de los 39 genes Hox, que determinan la identidad del eje anteroposterior (A-P) del cuerpo en los vertebrados e invertebrados. Segundo, examinamos como un gradiente morfogenético determina el eje dorsoventral (D-V) y la diferenciación de tejidos típica de todos los vertebrados. Este gradiente se forma durante la gastrulación a través de la secreción de Chordin, una proteína que se une a y antagoniza Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs), generando un flujo facilitado por la degradación de Chordin por la proteinasa Tolloid que libera BMPs en su forma activa en el lado ventral. Examinaremos como la actividad de estas redes genéticas que regulan la comunicación celular en el embrión son responsables de múltiples patologías como malformaciones congénitas y cáncer. Confirmando el aforismo de que la oncogénesis recapitula la ontogénesis, HoxA9 impulsa la leucemia mieloide aguda; β-Catenina promueve el cáncer colorrectal; Nodal causa la formación de células madre intratumorales; Chordin está amplificada en tumores broncopulmonares; y Goosecoid causa transformación epitelio mesenquimatosa por tanto metástasis. Finalmente, discutiremos como estos descubrimientos modificaron los conceptos actuales sobre la evolución darwiniana por selección natural. No todas las morfologías animales imaginables fueron posibles, porque debieron ser compatibles con la utilización de las redes genéticas universales del desarrollo embrionario heredadas de Urbilateria, el antecesor común de todos los animales bilaterales.
